Caring for your Poinsettia during the holiday season.

Posted on December 21st, 2011 by cobblestonecreek

For many of us, finding that perfect poinsettia is just like finding that perfect Christmas tree, and once we’ve found it, caring for it is just as important as that tree. I’ve lost several poinsettias to frost, just taking the plant from the store to the car, as poinsettias are very sensitive to the cold and wind. If the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, better have it wrapped (preferably with a paper wrapper, rather than plastic) by the store and make it a quick walk to the car.

Here are a few more tips on caring for your poinsettias, to ensure they last through the season.

* Place your plant in indirect sunlight for at lease six hours per day.
* Provide a room temperature between 19 – 21 degrees Celsius.
* Water your poinsettia when the soil feels dry to the touch.
* Fertilize after the blooming season with a balance all-purpose fertilizers.
* Don’t place your poinsettia near any cold drafts or a heat source.
* Don’t over water your poinsettia or allow it to sit in standing water.
and finally:
* Don’t fertilize your poinsettia during the blooming season, which is when the plant is red.

I hope these simple tips will allow you to enjoy your poinsettia longer than just a few weeks over Christmas.
